Two masterworks frame this superb programme. Haydn’s E minor trio has a dramatic opening movement, full of pregnant pauses and sudden dark shadows. The ‘Archduke’ is the grandest of piano trios, a powerful drama with a sublime slow movement in which Beethoven’s spirit soars.

This concert also marks the beginning of our three-year project, inspired by the Prometheus myth, with our new Composer in Association Stuart MacRae. His short new piece evokes the daily sunrise that greets Prometheus, chained on a mountain top – bright, incandescent music of renewal and finally, triumph.

'The Gould Trio perform [the Archduke Trio] with affection, conviction and polish… truly imposing… liltingly joyous, and stormy and argumentative too. Their finale… is a pure elated headlong indulgence.'

William Burn, pioneer of the Scottish Baronial style, designed many fine buildings in Scotland including St John the Evangelist in Edinburgh's Princes Street.

His splendid little church (1829), Stenton Parish Church, in the tranquil village of Stenton brings St John's to mind with its impressive square tower. Beautifully simple inside, its acoustic is ideal for chamber music.
