Rachmaninov Études Tableaux from Op 33 and Op 39

Following his sensational Messiaen recital at last year’s festival we welcome Steven Osborne back with a very different programme.

Whereas Schubert’s Impromptus explore a wide range of emotions in an intimate context, Rachmaninov’s Études Tableaux are the epitome of Russian pianistic virtuosity, designed to show off a vast range of colours and technique.

In the hands of a master pianist like Steven Osborne a performance of these late flowerings of the Russian Romantic tradition will be unforgettable.

“The audience, as one, was agog… Osborne’s attack is ferocious and fearless, his tenderness beyond words. His self appears subsumed in service to the composer. This is the best it gets.”
