Almighty and everlasting God
Drop, drop slow tears
Lift up your heads
Behold thou hast made my days
This is the record of John
Go from my window
O Lord in thy wrath
O clap your hands
See, see the Word is incarnate

Phantasm

Tenebrae
Nigel Short Director

In an event unique to the Lammermuir Festival we bring together two world class ensembles in some of the finest music of Tudor and Jacobean England.

Gibbons was a towering figure, whose anthems are among the most passionately lyrical of any English music before Purcell.

This programme includes some of his sublime viol consorts and unforgettable a cappella choral music.

It culminates in performances of three of the extraordinarily expressive verse anthems which affirm his greatness as a composer.

“Phantasm play with vast assurance and verve, always attractive, always with fresh and varied textures, always beautifully balanced. This is often playing of a breath-taking virtuosity that communicates the music with irresistible vitality.”
Gramophone

“Tenebrae’s precision, dynamic range, unanimity of sound and musicality were nothing short of astonishing… It was breathtakingly beautiful. One would be hard pressed to imagine a better performance.”
