A Lammermuir Journey with ZRI - Brahms and the Gypsy at Lammermuir Festival

Brahms and the Gypsy features the complete Brahms Clarinet Quintet re-scored with santouri and accordion to bring out the gypsy and Hungarian qualities of this much-loved piece of chamber music.

ZRI is named after the famous Viennese café Zum Roten Igel (The Red Hedgehog) where musicians like Schubert and Brahms heard gypsy and folk music. Beginning with their radical re-scoring of the Brahms Clarinet Quintet, this group of multi talented musicians has developed equally captivating programmes which re-imagine great works by Schubert and Janácek. This evocative musical journey visits three of our favourite historic churches in some of the county’s most beautiful countryside.

Stenton Parish Church, Stenton

William Burn, pioneer of the Scottish Baronial style, designed many fine buildings in Scotland including St John the Evangelist in Edinburgh's Princes Street.

His splendid little church (1829), Stenton Parish Church, in the tranquil village of Stenton brings St John's to mind with its impressive square tower. Beautifully simple inside, its acoustic is ideal for chamber music.
