One of the world’s leading cellists joins us for the first of two concerts. Alban Gerhardt offers the first and last of Bach’s wonderful Suites for solo cello in the vibrant acoustic of Lennoxlove’s Great Hall. Kodály’s sonata of 1915 was the first significant 20th-century piece for unaccompanied cello – an ambitious, brilliant, richly rewarding piece, flavoured with the tang of Hungarian folk music.

'No praise is too high for Alban Gerhardt's musicianship, commitment and technique.'

International Record Review

Lennoxlove House, Haddington

Dating back to the middle ages, Lennoxlove House reflects the myriad of family, political and social influences that have shaped Scottish history.

Owned originally by the Maitland family and later by the Blantyres, since 1946 it has been the seat of the Dukes of Hamilton who brought from Hamilton Palace an extensive inheritance of historic furnishings and art.

Mary Queen of Scots and Chopin are both reputed to have slept here. The barrel-vaulted Great Hall is in the oldest, 14th Century, part of the house.
