Jeremy Denk with the Valo Quartet I at Lammermuir Festival

Led by Maria Wloszczowska, the recently created Valo Quartet’s members – from Poland, the UK and Finland – are among Europe’s leading chamber music players. They join Jeremy Denk for two superb programmes featuring two of Fauré’s pieces for piano and strings.

Polish composer Szymanowski’s exquisitely wrought first quartet inhabits both the late-Romantic world of his earlier music and the more oblique sophistication of French impressionism. Fauré ploughed his own furrow, and the ardent passions of his music are nowhere more dramatically expressed, nor more abandoned, than in his second piano quartet. His music sweeps the listener along on a floodtide of euphoria. From these terrific musicians we can expect an electrifying experience.

Prestonkirk Parish Church, East Linton

The grassy hill beside the River Tyne on which this historic church stands has been a place of worship since at least the twelfth century.

Indeed, its origins may go back far into the Dark Ages, to the time of St Baldred, whose name is associated with an ancient well beside the river close to this church and to a whirl, or pool, in the river itself.

The present church is a fascinating amalgam of different architectural periods. The main body is Georgian - built in 1770 on the site of the nave of the earlier mediaeval church. Of that only the fine chancel survives, while the bell tower is 17th Century.
