Music by John Dowland, including fancies, galliards, and pieces from Lachrimae with toccatas from the First Lute Book by Girolamo Kapsberger

Thomas Dunford Archlute

The brilliant young French lutenist Thomas Dunford brings his archlute to Lennoxlove’s mediaeval Great Hall with a fascinating programme of contrasting composers. Dowland’s exquisite melancholy – he wrote some of the most emotionally charged music of the late Renaissance – is set against the highly virtuosic music of Kapsberger which makes a wonderful foil for the sad beauty of Dowland.

“Young lutenist Thomas Dunford is a wonderful artist… his solos are some of the gems of the album.”
Early Music Today

Lennoxlove House, Haddington

Dating back to the middle ages, Lennoxlove House reflects the myriad of family, political and social influences that have shaped Scottish history.

Owned originally by the Maitland family and later by the Blantyres, since 1946 it has been the seat of the Dukes of Hamilton who brought from Hamilton Palace an extensive inheritance of historic furnishings and art.

Mary Queen of Scots and Chopin are both reputed to have slept here. The barrel-vaulted Great Hall is in the oldest, 14th Century, part of the house.
