The first of two programmes involving the legendary jazz pianist Jason Rebello who brings his extraordinary musicianship to bear on the frontiers between jazz and classical music.

An exploration of Schumann’s pivotal song cycle, Frauenliebe und -leben, with re-composed and improvised material interspersed throughout and during the original songs.

Rebello has produced something quite remarkable here.'

Abbey Church, North Berwick

The Abbey Church was built in 1868 to house a congregation formed by the union of a Free Church with a United Presbyterian church. It was designed by Robert R Raeburn in Early English style. The site had been used in the 18th Century by a ‘praying society’ but it is not known why the new church was named ‘Abbey’. One plausible theory is that the area was known locally as the ‘abbey lands’ because it included the ruins of a mediaeval Cistercian priory. Among the church’s stained glass windows is one by Sax Shaw (1972) which has an arrangement of suspended planes representing an ascent of doves.

Edinburgh to North Berwick service. Station at west end of town. Venue is in the middle of town, about a 10 minute walk from the station.

Getting there by car

North Berwick is to the north east of the county, accessed by A198 and B1437.

Accessibility

Parking:

The venue is situated in the centre of town on the main road passing through the High Street. There is paid for on street car parking around the venue, a car park at the east end of town, and free parking out side the centre of town. There are no designated disabled parking spaces and we are unable to provide any outside the church due to official parking restrictions.
