Two great works for six string players – providing an uncommon richness of sound and a huge palette of colours. In Brahms’s hands the combination reaches inspiring heights of lyricism.

In the glorious acoustic of Whitekirk’s lovely candle-lit mediaeval kirk, Schoenberg’s glowing romanticism in his early Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night) is a magical way to complete the programme.

"I could fill a booklet with details of the playing of the six fantastic Hebrides string players."

St. Mary’s Church, Whitekirk

Whitekirk may be a tiny hamlet, but it has a long history of Christian pilgrimage dating back to the 14th Century, with the future Pope Pius II making a pilgrimage there after surviving a shipwreck off Dunbar in 1435.

Whitekirk's magnificent red sandstone church of St Mary today remains substantially the building begun in 1439. To enter it is a breathtaking surprise.
