Gramophone at Lammermuir - Lammermuir Festival

Last year, Martin Cullingford, online Editor of Gramophone magazine – one of the most prestigious and widest-read international classical music magazines – visited Lammermuir Festival.

Martin followed his visit by featuring the Lammermuir Festival in Gramophone’s regular travel slot ‘ Musical Journeys’ and while he was in East Lothian had the great fortune to visit Yester House,  the former home of Gian Carlo Menotti for over thirty years, and where the composer’s son still lives.  Menotti was one of East Lothian’s most famous residents, as was known affectionately to the locals as “Mr McNotti”.

In anticipation of Lammermuir Festival’s recognition of Menotti’s 100th anniversary this year,  Martin Cullingford commissioned a splendid feature on Gian Carlo Menotti, written by Michael White. You can read it on http://www.gramophone.co.uk/features/focus/gian-carlo-menotti-remembered, where you’ll also see some photos which you won’t see anywhere else – Menotti’s son kindly gave us these from his personal collection to accompany the piece.

This picture of Menotti will be completed by performances of his music during the Festival, including the Violin Concerto performed by Jennifer Koh, his song cycle Canti della Lontananza and Nocturne for Soprano, Harp and String Quartet and the lecture by Derek Watson. And all in the region of which Menotti was so fond.
