Two great song cycles with two outstanding young singers. Berlioz’s Les nuits d’été (Summer Nights) explores different aspects of romantic love in music of exquisite beauty and poise, sometimes light-hearted, sometimes intensely passionate.

Schumann’s less well-known Myrthen (Myrtles), sung here in a new translation by Jeremy Sams, dates from 1840, the year in which he composed many of his most famous songs, coinciding with the culmination of his love affair with his future wife, Clara Wieck. Myrthen was his wedding gift to her – a wedding wreath consisting of 26 settings of texts on scenes from married life, including flirtation, parenthood, separation and also deep inward reflection.

Burns was confident, polished, witty, expressive and sweet toned.

Nick Pritchard . . . an outstanding interpretation.

Dirleton Kirk, Dirleton

Dirleton is one of the most picturesque of East Lothian's many beautiful villages, and its church, Dirleton Kirk, dedicated to St Andrew, is a real gem.

Built in 1612 to replace the parish church along the coast at Gullane which was continually being inundated by sand, this long, low-eaved church with its square, gothic-topped tower is built of warm pink sandstone.

Its striking Archerfield Aisle (1664) is Scotland's earliest example of neo-classical architecture. Inside, the mellow light filters through some especially fine stained glass.
