Michael Tippett’s 1951 song-cycle The Heart’s Assurance is imbued with the ecstatic, dancing delight that was to fill his opera The Midsummer Marriage a few years later. It makes the perfect prelude to Vaughan Williams’s On Wenlock Edge, haunting settings for tenor and piano quintet of achingly nostalgic poems by A.E. Housman. The programme closes with Schubert’s last quartet, the magisterial G Major, which is chamber music on a vast scale – passionate, revelatory and life enhancing.

"As an interpreter of English song, Gilchrist is in a class by himself."

Dirleton Kirk, Dirleton

Dirleton is one of the most picturesque of East Lothian's many beautiful villages, and its church, Dirleton Kirk, dedicated to St Andrew, is a real gem.

Built in 1612 to replace the parish church along the coast at Gullane which was continually being inundated by sand, this long, low-eaved church with its square, gothic-topped tower is built of warm pink sandstone.

Its striking Archerfield Aisle (1664) is Scotland's earliest example of neo-classical architecture. Inside, the mellow light filters through some especially fine stained glass.
